Black Friday - Consumerism at it's Worst
In just two weeks, Christians around the country will take the bounty given to them by Christ and blow it on sooo much worthless and meaningless garbage. The amount that will be spent over the 4 day holiday weekend will be completely and utterly ungodly. Last year over the holiday weekend, sales reached $52.4 billion. This was up 16% from $45 billion the year before. I can only picture Christ with tears in his eyes as His children show complete and total disregard for the suffering in our world as they fill their homes and hearts with worldly possessions. Afterwards, they will go to bed, say their prayers and it will never enter their minds the number of children that will go to bed hungry on this night. They won't even give a second thought to the elderly woman on the corner holding an oxygen tank that they have driven by so many times. She is just pan handling after all. They won't think about their neighbor who is about to have their gas shut off because they can't make their payment. They won't think about the homeless man on the other side of town who will be sleeping outside again tonight because no one cares.
At least they got that big screen that was on sale though. They even managed to push other people out of the way to get that discount on a PS3. They might even make a child cry because of stomping on their foot as they pushed past them to be the first to get to the counter to get an Ipad. They will go to bed fat and happy tonight. Oh yes they will. They might even tell each other how "Blessed" they are when in fact their behavior is most un-Christ like.
The cold hard truth is, Christians in America would sooner give hundreds of dollars to a corporate giant than help their neighbor. It's been proven year after year and will be proven again here in two weeks. Our priorities are pretty screwed up. God Bless America!
