Eat To Live

My family recently changed our diets to the Mediterranean diet, or a more whole foods, plant based diet.  My wife has had some health issue going on that could possibly be explained by an aversion to gluten.  Her gastroenterologist tested her for celiacs disease, but tested negative.  He said people could still have an aversion to gluten even when results come back negative. So, after watching the 3 documentaries I noted on the sidebar on the right of my blog, we decided it was time to change our lifestyles.  Rather than living to eat, we now eat to live.

I myself am not really overweight or in bad health.  I became a certified BSA/Red Cross life guard for my sons scout troop and have been pretty fit for the last few years.  We have been on this altered lifestyle for more than a month now and it's been pretty good.  We have tried all kinds of plant based and Mediterranean recipes.  It's not much more expensive than all the regular junk we were buying before starting this lifestyle.  The biggest gains are no processed foods, no MSG and nothing containing high fructose corn syrup, which is the biggest problem with the typical western diet.  We also didn't know about the casien protein in cow milk that has been shown to cause cancer and that aspartame has been shown to kill brain cells.

We are now eating all the right foods.  Plenty of fruits and vegetables.  With the Mediterranean diet we incorporate fish and chicken.  It hasn't been a difficult change.  You feel better overall, you lose weight, you lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.  You have more energy.  We also switched to almond milk which is actually very good and cut way back on cow milk.  After about a week or two you have rid your body of all the chemicals and toxins that were in the processed food you were eating.

This has pretty much been a no-brainer of a change.  I'm not quite sure why we hadn't been eating like this all along.  We are healthier now than we have ever been.  I said I wasn't overweight, but I had started to develop that typical over 40 gut.  I took a picture and measurements before we started this lifestyle change.  I will post them once I have reached the chiseled six pack that we all have under the layer of fat we lug around our mid sections.  For now, we continue to eat to live and not live to eat.
